I’ve always wanted to make video games, but something always held me back: that shit is damn complicated and I not so smart am. But lack of wits be damned! I’ve just begun learning how to make video games with Unity Engine and C#. This past weekend I completed my first game, which I built from one of Unity’s beginner tutorials.
The process of following the tutorial to click all the right things to click, and type all the right mystical looking C# code to type, very much reminded me of my first computer, a Commodore Vic 20. I received this computer as a Christmas gift at the age of 8-years-old. While it came with a few game cartridges it also came with a book of GW-Basic code the size of the Oxford English Dictionary. I would spend hours typing in lines of code – plucking away at the keyboard with two fingers at a time – to see what gaming wonders awaited once the coding was completed and I then typed “RUN”. Almost every time the gaming wonders looked something like:
SYNTAX ERROR
Then I would go play outside.
In addition to tackling Unity’s own tutorials, I’ve also enrolled in a Unity Game Development course at Udemy.com and will be starting on that sometime this week.
