150 years ago, July 5th 1862, my great, great, great grandfather, John H. Haley, was wounded in a skirmish with rebel guerillas along the White River 10 miles above Augusta Missouri duringthe Civil War. His left arm was amputated the same day. He was in Company “I”, Woods Regiment, 6th Regiment Missouri Volunteer Cavalry. His horse however was unharmed and continued to serve and be paid. John had just turned 17 years of age.
He is pictured here with his dog Beaver. We have always called him “One Arm John” in our family, although I’m not sure that he was ever referred to by this name while he was alive.
